The
American Jewish Experience
[ send
me this paper ]
It is a fundamental aspect of New York life that there are
enclaves of different social and class distinctions that
have grown from the need of sets of immigrants to come
together in a cohesive community to support and provide each
other with a sense of stability and coherence. This 6 page
paper examines the unique position of the Jewish immigrant
to New York in the early twentieth century. It looks at the
rift in the community that was described geographically but
was based on socio-economic factors and rooted in cultural
beliefs. The political organizations of the Zionist and
Labor Movements are also explored. No bibliography provided.

Cultural
Changes Resulting From World War II
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page paper examining the cultural changes ushered in by
the actions and consequences of World War II. Hundreds of
thousands of women had gone to work in the nation's
factories that had been dedicated to war materiel production
and only grudgingly gave up those jobs for returning
veterans. They had become accustomed to the wages and
fulfillment of outside employment and set out to regain it
in their own right. African Americans were granted the right
to vote in 1944 because of their overwhelming willingness to
fight and die for the country that had taken little notice
of their existence, and the GI Bill provided access to
college education to thousands who otherwise would not have
been able to attend. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Modern
Patriarchy
[ send
me this paper ]
An 11 page paper. Patriarchy progressively has moved from
the realms of anthropological and sociological 'quirk' to
that of full-blown conspiracy, according to some modern
authors. What these extreme feminist authors have failed to
consider, however, is that patriarchy as a cultural norm
seems perfectly natural in the cultures in which it is
practiced, and that it is only those of other parts of the
world who have any complaints. Even though patriarchy is
ingrained in many cultures of the world, some of those
cultures are facing the necessity of reassessing their
positions, forced not by any commonweal thinking, but by
physical realities. Somalia is used as an example.

Common
Developmental Characteristics Between Mesopotamia And Egypt
[ send
me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Mesopotamia and Egypt shared some common
features that encouraged their initial growth and continued
development overtime, which also served to contribute to
their unique characters. In determining the similarities
that demonstrated how the inhabitants utilized their
environment, there are myriad considerations one can assess;
after all, developing any congregation of peoples requires
the germinating of many cultural seeds. Much exists within
the framework of creation so as to afford the inhabitant an
opportunity to move forward with an ongoing sense of
prosperity and ingenuity. The writer compares and contrasts
developmental characteristics as they relate to Egypt and
Mesopotamia. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Collapse
of the Mayan Civilization
[ send
me this paper ]
The Mayans had a strong and complex civilization from A.D.
250 to A.D. 900. At the peak of their strength, between 800
and 900 A.D., this great empire suddenly collapsed.
Archeologists have debated about the causes of the collapse;
with overpopulation, disease, insect plagues, peasant
revolts against the ruling classes (civil wars), and climate
change being among the conditions theorized as being
responsible. Warfare leading to the balkanization of the
culture is said to have effected the fall as well. Recently,
the discovery of a major volcanic eruption has increased the
probability of weather playing a large role in the collapse.
Beginning around 800 A.D. the Yucatan suffered a severe
200-year drought. It is likely that a combination of all of
these influences came together to bring about the fall of
the Mayan Empire. This 10 page paper examines the possible
causes, with an emphasis on warfare and drought.

Are
Non-Verbal Communications In-Born or are They Learned ?
[ send
me this paper ]
An 8 page look at non-verbal communications (i.e., gestures,
motions, batting eyelashes, etc;) and the importance of
realizing that different groups of people may interpret them
in different ways. The primary focus of this particular
report, however, is to analyze the controversy over whether
most non-verbal communication activities are in-born traits
or learned activities. Various issues and studies are
explored to help answer this very question and arguments
seem to lean strongly in favor of the 'in-born side' for
certain non-verbal communications while some lean strongly
in favor of the 'learned' side for other examples of
non-verbal communication. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Animal
Sacrifice- How Religions Lend Insight To The Teachings Of
Sacrifice In The Old Testament
[ send
me this paper ]
10 pages in length. The study of animal sacrifice in other
religions lends insight to the teachings of sacrifice in the
Old Testament in that it often correlates with the concept
set forth by biblical instruction. Animals have been looked
upon as sacrificial for a number of religions that utilize
their flesh and bodily fluids as a means by which to either
stave off evil spirits or to bless themselves and their
people. Religions that continue to employ animal sacrifice
in contemporary society, however, have been met with great
consternation and legal resistance, inasmuch as people all
over the world are evolving to such a point that sacrificial
ceremonies are no longer considered to be a universally
accepted practice. The writer discusses animal sacrifice in
relation to religion and the Old Testament. Bibliography
lists 10 sources.

"Argonauts

Discussion of the Two Classic Anthropological Texts by
Malinowski and Evans-Pritchard
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page comparison of two classic anthropological accounts
and the differences in their ethnographic styles. Outlines
the contents of each account, detailing economics and
non-utilitarian and ceremonial aspects of each group, and
compares and contrasts the ethnographic methods used to
record those accounts. Concludes that Malinowski's constant
interruptions of his narration of Trobiand life to insert
his ethnographic perspective illustrate the fact that
narrative and ethnography are not necessarily incompatible.
Malinowski in fact became a stylistic guide for subsequent
anthropological works as a new-style ethnographic science.
Suggests that Evans-Pritchard recorded his account in a
manner which did not really differ substantially from
Malinowski but in a manner which he saw no reason to
justify, perhaps using Malinowski's earlier ventures into
new-style ethnographic science as a guideline for his own.

"Dancing
Skeletons": A Review of the Book by Catherine Dettwyler
[ send

A 5 page review of the ethnographic account of fieldwork in
medical anthropology. Working among malnourished children in
West Africa Dettwyler experienced both professional and
personal insight. Although sometimes criticized for her
subjective approach to her subject, in reality Dettwyler
provides both a a touching human account and a valuable
ethnography. Her approach to death as "the ultimate
illness", however, is one which is unfortunate. This
paper points out that death is in fact a natural component
of life. To view death as an ultimate illness is to regard
death, a phase which we must all pass through, as a personal
and medical failure. No additional sources are listed.

between people or trees. It is more challenging to look for
the elements that could be shared. Or we might also search
for similar factors, or basic conditions that prompt the
similarities. This discussion will examine two diverse
groups of people and find that a connection to the land
through architecture, and the unique buildings they put on
the land, has kept two groups, miles apart in a similar
comparison circle. First we shall consider the residents of
Locorontonda, Bari Provence, in the boot-heel of Italy. Then

Alzheimer's
And Cultural Anthropology
[ send
me this paper ]
7 pages in length. Within the fundamental framework of human
culture exists a dichotomy of anthropological applications
that ultimately form man's existence and outlook. These
divergent elements help bring to light the very essence of
what it means to be part of a particular society based
solely upon one's cultural understanding. It is important
for the one to understand that there exist myriad
philosophies by which people live their lives. These
philosophies help maintain order and a sense of direction
that otherwise would merely drift in subconscious thought,
which also helps to apply a modicum of understanding to the
concept of meaning. These fundamental principles of cultural
anthropology provide the concepts of how people incorporate
certain occurrences throughout their daily existence. The
relationship that exists between Alzheimer's and cultural
anthropology clearly illustrates the manner by which one's
physical existence is often dependent upon the constricting
components of culture. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

America
Is No Longer A Melting Pot
[ send
me this paper ]
5 pages in length. It has long been said that the United
States of America is a vast melting pot of various races,
religions and heritages that make it one of the most
culturally diverse populations in all the world. This
blending of such culture has been credited with bringing
societies closer together and allowing people to understand
and accept other lifestyles other than their own. The writer
discusses why this is no longer true; that while America may
still house the greatest variety of peoples, it is no longer
an educational or cultural melting pot. No additional
sources cited.

Ancestry
And Race Of Persons In The United States, 1990
[ send

5 pages in length. When assessing the value of Table #5 with
regard to racial and ethnic relations within the United
States, one can readily comprehend a significant imbalance
of cultural populations and their locations. Clearly,
central cities and those near suburbs reflect the highest
number of persons altogether, with the European white
citizenry standing far more populated than all the rest. It
comes as no surprise, then, to learn that white privilege
serves as the primary racial and ethnic concern over and
above most other issues of America's prejudice. No

Anthropology
of the Body
[ send
me this paper ]
This 11 page report discusses anthropology of the body and
the ways in which every culture constructs a symbolic system
of meanings which includes a representation of the body and
a theory of the body’s physical existence. In western
society the body is viewed as a symbol of individualism and
separation. In traditional societies the body connects the
individual to the society and nature. Such an
anthropologically-constructed body can be analyzed in terms
of form, content, knowing and value. In the study of the
anthropology of the body, it is important to consider the
body as the subject and object of social processes.

intervention. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Birth
Order: How It Influences One's Life And Development
[ send

6 pages in length. Is there any truth to the separation of
birth order as it relates to how people develop? The
scientific community has long attempted to demonstrate a
relationship between birth order and personal achievement,

distinct characteristics associated to the first, middle and
last child. Many sociologists have attempted to pinpoint
these respective idiosyncrasies, with findings indicative of
quite singular attributes for each birth order child.

Cannibalism:
Ancient Cultural Rituals, Acts of Desperation, and Acts of
Psychological Deviancy
[ send
me this paper ]
An 8 page discussion of the societal considerations of
cannibalism. Approaches cannibalism first from the
ritualistic perspective of ancient cultures which in many
case see the act as preserving the connection between living
and dead and the passing of the attributes of the dead to
the living. The author then approaches the topic of
cannibalism from the perspective of those who must resort to
cannibalism in order to survive catastrophic events.
Provides examples of the 1992 air crash in the Andes and the
Donner Party in the winter of 1846-1847 in which the
survivors ate the flesh of those that died in order to live
themselves. Concludes with an example of the psychological
deviancy of cannibalism in such cases as that of serial
killer Jeffrey Dahmer who was convicted of killing and
eating portions of the bodies of seventeen of his victims.

Daniel
Quinn's "Ishmael" And Marvin Perry's "Western
Civilization: A Brief History": Comparing Perspectives
[ send
me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Humankind's history has been filled with
advancements; indeed, one can readily argue that since the
very first time man realized he had the ability to formulate
specific answers to problematic questions, he has been
furthering the human race without so much as a reprieve.
This unwavering progress has been recorded and taught in
every classroom of every school all over the world. It would
never occur to anyone who has spent his or her entire life
believing such teachings that there could be something
incredibly wrong with the manner by which humanity has
furthered its own species. This is precisely the point of
Daniel Quinn's Ishmael, which effectively characterizes the
origins of civilization as nothing short of disastrous for
both the planet and other species alike. When compared with
the likes of Marvin Perry's Western Civilization: A Brief
History, it becomes quite clear how mankind demonstrated the
damaging characteristics of individualism from the
beginning. No additional sources cited.
